Thank You Mom

Sunday means I made it though another week. I let out a sigh of relief this morning. I accomplished most of the things I need to do with out imploding and Kylie is still lively, healthy and cheery. I'm rejuvenated and ready to do it all again. Cheers the freaking weekend!

I found this video on Vimeo called "Thank You Mom" directed by Michael Marantz for anyone else that needs reassurance, your small efforts are not being overlooked. Keep it up mommy.

Nutty about Snack Time: The Benefits of Nuts

I'm getting better and better about making healthy choices throughout the day when it comes to what I put into my body. It's not just about a balanced meal, its also making better snack choices and drinking water. The old me has a stash of Pringles and leftover halloween candy safe for rummaging when my restless tastes buds get to watering. Now I'm opting for better choices like Pistachios! They are so yummy and high in monounsaturated fats (good fat). I recommend keeping a pack in your purse instead of gum or candy. It's more fulfilling and for sure healthier.

For The 19 Year Old Black Girl That Didn't Like Her Name

I first read about this story two days ago after clicking on a Huffington post link. Keisha (now Kylie) Austin resides in Kansas, MO with her mom Cristy in what they describe as a predominantly white community. Having a biracial daughter, Cristy wanted to do her daughter a service by naming her Keisha. She felt her little girl would feel more connected to her black side and even went on to say she thought the name represented a "strong, feminine, beautiful black woman."

"Girlfriends" Creator Credits Her Mother's Sacrifice For Her Success

Play the must-see acceptance speech from filmmaker and TV producer Maria Brock Akil to find out why creating her own image of black women in entertainment was important to her.

"There is an image that resembles us…because we are far more beautiful and complex. At least, that's what I see. Especially, when I see the unconditional love of my mother and her courage and commitment to raise me fearlessly to find my purpose." - Mara Brock Akil on her mom and the images of Black Women in entertainment

Berry, Berry, GOOD: The Benefits Of Berries

Getting into my mid twenties, I notice the changes that people warn you about in your teens when you're stuffing honey buns and gummy worms down your throat. "Enjoy your metabolism while it lasts", older people would warn as I'd be dragging a book bag full of hostess snacks.

Even as I appear to be even thinner than my high school weight, my immune system isn't as prevailing when ingesting processed and sugary snacks. Veering away from the cookie and cake aisle at the grocery store, I've found healthy replacements in the fruit and vegetable section.

Video: A New Perspective For Moms

Being hard on myself is a somber feeling. I've had periods of uncertainty in motherhood that manifested self-doubt. I learned quickly my attitude wasn't fruitful or attracting anything positive. I can not say I haven't slipped into this way of thinking once and again on bad days but then I remind myself "Hey, you did your best today, it's ok to move on." The following video documents the reactions of mom's like me to what their children truly think about them. I shed a few tears after 5 seconds, get the Kleenex ready.

I really can't help but to think "What would Kylie say about me?"

Smart Mom Healthy Woman: Squat Variations

It's November, I can't believe how the year is flying by. I  woke up today feeling like it was a good day to challenge myself. Especially with the holidays approaching, it would be smart to get my mind and body right before indulging in decadent foods and opinionated family members. I'm starting a campaign for myself today called "Smart Mom, Healthy Woman". I'll be tracking the progress here and on my Instagram account. Get ready for a few work out videos and some healthy snack suggestions and whatever else my mind brings to this experience.

Here I put together a video for a few squat variations I practice when I work out. This isn't about strenuous exercising for me as much as it is about breathing and practicing health. These should be good for any body type if you want to follow along.

The Reality of StillBirth

Nothing really scares you in your adult life like the horror of mortality. In this chilling video posted by the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth, you get the commentary from a handful of parents' about their experiences with stillborns. "Born In Silence" was made to raise awareness about stillbirth and help soothe people who have had this experience. Over 3 million babies are stillborn. Staggering.
