Going Bronze: Coloring My Natural Hair

I decided to try something different with my hair just to chop up the monotony of the short, black, curly look I've had for over a year. I want to say that I have a great relationship with my hair. I really love how its grows out of my scalp and there is one thing I've learned that's for certain: IT GROWS. This is why I have no problem having fun with it now.

I gave my self a full homemade photo shoot after coloring because, hey, I felt great. :)

Things I learned when coloring my hair:

Buy double the color!
I initially only bought one box of Dark and Lovely  hair color in "Sunkissed brown". It was the color I wanted but I was starting with such a dark natural hue I had to do it twice. My curls also just sucked away the first kit. I waited a few hours after deep conditioning and adding tea tree oil and shea butter to my hair to redo it. The last kit picked up was the Clairol Textures & Tones color in bronze.

Protect your skin!
(And the sink and the floor and the wall)
Trying my best to not get the color on my skin and everywhere, I applied the color carefully with my hair in four sections. I still applied some petroleum jelly around my edges, nape of my neck and ear to prevent the color from sticking to my skin. Some of the color got on the sink but a sponge and some bleach helped that.

Moisturizing is key!
So I had a fear of my curl pattern changing, did not happen at all! But I do notice what everyone always warns before going lighter, my hair feels a little drier than usual. Its not a HUGE difference but its felt. I bought a product with pure shea butter and vitamin E that works lovely and I also add tee tree oil to my scalp. Im happy with the result. So far, so good.
