The Great Risk + The Best Of Atlanta

I knew at the beginning of 2013 that it would be a year for great risk taking. I wasn't happy with Kylie in NYC at the New Year. I felt like a mother consumed by the huge city that once enticed and raised me. Small details like the attitudes of people when I got on the train with a stroller made me second guess my staying. Kylie's dad was knee-deep in his career. She only saw him in between meetings, shows, recording and appearances. Then my dad retired, taking my mom and closest sister to Virginia. Should I go? I was alone.

I'd debate with myself with over moving. NYC is one of the best cities in the world and to trade in all that I was exposed to at an early age felt like blasphemy. There is accessibility to large parks, museums, education and diverse people. Where else could Kylie experience culture and independence like I did going to school in Queens and Brooklyn? The train itself was a Petri dish of varying social classes. I didn't want to trade any of this in for the assumed racial and economic monoculture of Southern Virginia. That brought me to the point of quizzing close friends about their experience in varying cities. I had considered LA where we had family, San Fransisco and New Orleans where friends with children relocated but eventually I made the decision spend winter in Atlanta. To try it. I had one friend there that ran her own business. She was a NYC transplant that not only adjusted well but is well received by "New Atlanta's" thriving art community. I saw community and culture. I liked it. It would also be the perfect time frame to leave since Kylie's dad would be touring for nearly two months and also recording through out winter. By mid October our bags were pack and I was headed toward Georgia.

I've spent the last 4 months in Atlanta's Castleberry Hill area. I had a lot of adjusting to do with a 3 year old but we made it. I found work for myself and school for Kylie. Overall, I'm happy I took the risk. I evaluated my stay after a few months and realized I like being closer to family for the sake of Kylie. In case of emergency, having people a town over or in the city is a special comfort I missed while staying in a strange new place. With that understood, I've decided to spend the next year in Los Angeles. (Pray for a mother)

I realize that Atlanta was not a place I'd live longterm but I value all of our experiences no less. I would say to anyone that wants to see a change in their lives to do something about it. I wouldn't have been able to assess what I do and do not like when thinking about a a city to raise my kid in if I didn't leave to see it. I feel at peace with my decisions. Below are photos we accumulated during our stay. It's not fair for them to stay inside my iPhone so I'm releasing them. These are the very best of Atlanta.

It was great living just a walk away from the Georgia Dome and CNN center. Kylie, my friend Brittany and made this walk often to get to the post office, the food court in the CNN center and to get to the marta train.

This is a view from the Ferris wheel Downtown ATL.

The Georgia aquarium was also a walk away. It sat across from Centennial Olympic park. It's the best aquarium I've ever been to.

Kylie in the food court at the aquarium. She got her face painted with a dolphin.

Every Tuesday Kylie and I dined at Pearl Lounge on Peters street. I ordered steamed mussels, sweet potatoes, Mac and cheese and fried/steamed shrimp every time.

 Street art in our area.

Kylie loved this mural by Paper Frank. She actually had the pleasure of painting with him at City Of Ink. We are huge fans of his work.

We had a companion name Rudy while we stayed. Unfortunately he couldn't come with us to California but we love you Rudy! He's safe with another family now.

Out of everything I'll remember our walks to to school the most. I love you Kylie. This was for you. Xoxo.
